Delhi, the capital city of
India boasts of its glorious history. Dotted with captivating mosques,
monuments and forts, Delhi travel still offers you to see the marks of
ancient days during your holidays in New Delhi. It is an interesting
experience to explore the chaotic Old Delhi and the well-maintained New Delhi.
Let us know more about Delhi tourism and its attractions.
Red Fort
Constructed during the Shah
Jahan's reign, Red Fort Delhi is made of red sandstone. It holds a
special attention among all the famous Delhi attractions as the site
serves as the venue from where the Prime Minister of India addresses mass on
the Independence Day. It houses several interesting sections like the
Diwan-e-khas and Diwan-e-aam and the weaponry museum. Another highlight of the
fort is the Sound and Light Show in the evenings.
Qutab Minar
Constructed during the reign
of Qutub-ud-din Aibak in 1199 A.D, it is a 72.5 m high pillar structure that
serves as an important attraction on your Delhi sightseeing. This
soaring tower of victory marks the triumph of the Sultan. The tower comprises
of the five distinct storeys and each of them is marked by an extruding balcony
and tapers. Qutub Minar New Delhi has five storeys. The first
three-storeys are built of red sandstone whereas the fourth and fifth storeys
are made of marble and sandstone. Located nearby are the ruins of Kila Ri
Pithora, which is the fort of Prithviraj Chauhan.
Chandni Chowk
It is the most popular main street
of Old Delhi. The area is exactly opposite to the orderly streets of New Delhi.
Cars, pedestrians, cycle-rickshaws and hand-pulled carts all compete for space.
It is chaotic and crumbling area but is equally fascinating as well. The narrow
lanes abound in precious jewellery, electronics and fabrics. This is also an
excellent area to taste some of the best street foods of the capital city.
Various Delhi travel agents recommend Chandni Chowk for a hearty
shopping experience.
India Gate
Located at Rajpath in the
centre of Delhi there lies the India Gate. Designed by Edwin Lutyens in memory
of the martyrs of India soldiers, the structure glorifies with the name
inscribed on the arch. An eternal flame, the Amar Jawan Jyoti burns in memory
of the solders. The area, enveloped by lush green lawns, fountains and water
bodies serves as evergreen picnic zone amidst the central Delhi. India Gate
Delhi is the most enticing attraction of the capital city.
Located near Kalkaji in Delhi,
Lotus Temple speaks volume of being the only Bahai Temple in Asia. Designed by
Fariborz Sahba, the temple comprises of a half-floating lotus as the main
structure, combined with white petals of marble. It is 35 m tall and lies
amidst 9 pools and big lawns. Inside the temple, there is a
huge prayer hall where devotees can meditate in a peaceful ambiance.
In evenings, the structure
gets illuminated and enjoys its golden glow. Built in 1986, the temple is open
to people of all faiths. You cannot afford to miss this spectacular temple on
your Delhi tour. The temple remains closed on Mondays. You do not need
to pay anything to enter the temple as there is no admission fee.
